​Hugh Scheffy of Altadena, California, 85, died peacefully at Montecedro on March 17, 2026.

An Eagle Scout, Hugh built a life marked by discipline, service, and a love of the outdoors. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy (Class of 1958), earned his B.A.. from Harvard College summa cum laude (Class of 1962), and completed an MBA Harvard Business School (Class of 1965).  In 1995, he obtained an Executive MBA at Claremont Graduate University.

Hugh held several financial management positions in the homebuilding industry and later served as a bankruptcy trustee for a real estate development company, bringing steadiness, care, and integrity to challenging circumstances.

An avid mountain climber, he climbed all 54 of Colorado’s fourteeners—an achievement that reflected his determination and joy in the natural world. In his community, he volunteered in the Chaplain’s Department at Glendale Adventist Hospital and served for two years as treasurer of the Montecedro Resident Council.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marleen Scheffy; his brother, Brackett Scheffy; his children, Clark Scheffy (and his wife, Zoe Scheffy) and Marieke Armstrong (and her husband, Scott Armstrong); and his grandchildren, Nelleke Scheffy, Magnus Scheffy, Abby Armstrong, and Owen Armstrong.
