Betsy Hinrichs

Bettye Jo Powell, known to all as Betsy, was born in New Albany, Mississippi, on January 13, 1933, and passed away in Sarasota, Florida, on September 27, 2021.

Betsy was born to Virginia (Ashley) and Hansel Powell. She spent her young life there until going to Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Her first marriage produced three sons: Richard (Rick), b. 1956; Robert, b. 1959 d. 1982; and Reed, b. 1962.

Betsy lived in several places in her life, including Mississippi; North Carolina; Virginia; and Des Moines. She worked in various capacities throughout her life. She taught second grade and special education. In Des Moines she was the first patient advocate at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. For several years she traveled the US leading seminars called Adventures in Attitudes, something for which her positive energy was particularly suited.

Her first marriage ended in 1978, after which she moved to Minnesota. Several years later she and Harvey Hinrichs met and were married in 1988. After building a spacious house in Minnesota they moved to Sarasota, Florida, in 1991, where they lived most of the rest of their lives (and built yet another house). Betsy and Harvey traveled the world, especially on many cruises to the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, and Asia.

Betsy was very involved in the Sarasota Opera Guild, and became an active social hostess, one of her stellar talents. For many years Betsy and Harvey were members of the Unity Church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her ready smile, and warm and good-humored nature.

She is survived by her sons Rick and Reed Walters; stepson Dustin and step daughter-in-law Chris Hinrichs; grandsons Jonathan and Joseph Hinrichs; sister Peg and brother-in-law Ed Dupree; brother Billy and sister-in-law Kaye Powell; and nieces and nephews.

Harvey Hinrichs

On Oct. 14, 2021, just four days after his 85th birthday and less than three weeks after his wife “Betsy” passed, Harvey N. Hinrichs passed on as well in Sarasota, Florida.

Harvey was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, on Oct. 10, 1936, to Heye and Doris (Gunderson) Hinrichs. He grew up in the Kent, Minnesota, area where his family farmed and owned the Deep Rock Gas Station in Kent. He graduated from Breckenridge Sr. High in 1954.

In 1959 Harvey was united in marriage in Colfax, North Dakota, to Sharon Bolstad.

Harvey served in the Army in Vietnam from 1960 to 1963.  Though he never spoke of this, he received an Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service as well as a Letter of Commendation for his involvement in the apprehension of an escaped convict found on his military base.

Harvey and Sharon were blessed with one son, Dustin. They made their home in Anoka, Minnesota, where Harvey worked for Overhead Garage Door. Harvey and partners began their own business as Automatic Garage Door in 1969 and then in 1977 he and his brother Orlan partnered to own the very successful Ideal Door Garage Door Company.

Harvey married Bettye Jo “Betsy” (Powell) Walters in 1988. They lived most of their married life in Sarasota, Florida. Together they enjoyed many social activities in the community including the opera.

Harvey played golf and fished into the last years of his life. He loved his annual fishing trips to Canada with his grandsons Jon and Joe. He was known for his gentle demeanor and quick wit. He will be sadly missed by their many friends in Sarasota and his friends and family in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota.

Harvey is survived by his son Dustin and Chris Hinrichs, his grandsons Jonathan and Joseph Hinrichs, step-sons Rick Walters and Reed Walters, many nephews, one niece and extended family.

Harvey was preceded in death by his wife Bettye Jo “Betsy” (Sept. 27, 2021), his first wife Sharon (1987), his parents Heye (1966) and Doris (2001), his brothers Orlan (2007) and Rodney “Cobb” (2004).
